Hechi, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, held a National Disabled Persons' Day event on the eve of May 21, advocating prevention and care for the disabled.
Brochures and free volunteer medical and legal consultations were offered to citizens as part of the effort to raise public awareness and aid for the disabled to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.
An additional poverty alleviation exhibition for disabled people was also held to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit among disabled citizens. Tang Biaowen, deputy Party chief of Hechi, voiced his hope that the event would help to pass on China's traditional virtues and improve societal awareness in supporting the disabled.
Tang visited Hechi People's Hospital and the city's health center for women and children to inquire about the treatments of disabled patients and their living conditions, praising the hospitals for their achievements in treating disabilities. He also brought gifts for children with cerebral palsy currently undergoing physical therapy sessions.
"Governments at various levels should make efforts to improve disability rehabilitation services and basic medical care for disabled citizens to build a prosperous society for all," Tang said.
